The US election night 2016 at Hebbelschool
Hello, Mr. President!
Kiel. Pupils stayed up all night to watch the American election 2016.
Usually the pupils of the “Hebbelschule Kiel“ spend the nights in their beds, sleeping and recovering. But Tuesday night was different. During the election night, the 10th grade could stay at school to do workshops and watch the livestream of the election.
The event started at 8 pm. Until midnight the pupils worked in small groups to find informaton about the candidates, their resolutions and the american election system. After that the pupils presented what they had found out.
After two hours of sleep, the livestream started and the tension rose. Even though everyone was very tired but most people stayed awake until 6 am.
“It was a very interesting night. Everybody was very excited and motivated, so I think it was a very good idea to initiate such an event“, one of the pupils commented after the event. Everybody agreed that this election was even more hyped than the last ones.
When everybody went home at 6 am, it was not final that Donald Trump would be the winner and the future president of the United States, but it was looming ahead.
Everybody was shocked, because most people would have voted for Hillary Clinton and had been convinced that she would succeed.
“This result would be a desaster for the whole world“one of the pupils said before he went home at 6 o`clock. „But hope dies last. Maybe the results will still change“.
But he hoped in vain. At 9:00 am the whole world knew that the Repuplican Donald Trump would become the next Mr. President.

US politics in a German School
A German school watched the US election live and did workshops about it
Kiel - Yesterday, US election day, the whole tenth grade and four English teachers of the Hebbelschule came together at night to watch a livestream of the US election. Before midnight, they did workshops to get to know something about the election, the candidates and their campaigns, but before the workshops, everybody had dinner and the atmosphere was good but as soon as the first results came in, the mood got worse. A lot of people tried to stay awake and the others tried to get at least an hour of sleep.
"I really liked it’’ said a pupil, "it was really interesting to see what happened in the US!’’ The only bad thing was, that the pupils hat to leave school before the election was over.
But what do the pupils think about the new president? "I was really shocked when I saw that Trump got so much votes and I would have preferred Hillary Clinton as president.’’ They were also shocked that Trump became president, although Clinton got most of
the votes. This is a difference to the German electoral system.
All in all, the pupils liked the event very much and the teachers want to repeat it… in four years!

An article about the election night 2016
The night between the eighth and the ninth of November, our school did something out of the ordinary: All the year tens met up at the school to watch the American election. We met at eight pm in the auditorium. After our three English teachers explained to us what exactly we were going to do, we found each other in groups of two to five while eating dinner of a buffet of food everybody had brought from home, to work on workshops concerning the former American presidents, as well as this year‘s presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. We researched the American history, analyzed caricatures and speeches and informed ourselves about Clinton and Trump from half past eight to midnight. Afterwards, we mixed our first groups to build expert groups to design posters that are now hanging in the auditorium for everyone to see. Once we were finished with those, we all sat down to watch the CNN-news (which were later changed to sky news). A few students lay down to get a couple hours of sleep, but most of us stayed awake. At seven am we got sent home, as everybody started to feel dizzy of tiredness.
I really enjoyed the night and I think the idea was great, however I wish we could have stayed until the result was clear. I found out about Trump being victorious the next day during breakfast, and I broke down crying. I understand that Hillary wouldn‘t have been much of a better leader, but at least she supports lgbt+ people, colored people, other minorities and she is pro-choice, whereas Trump is a homophobe, racist and sexist. Also, he has never been a politician. He doesn‘t have the same experience as Hillary.
I have lgbt+ and Hispanic friends in the US and I am genuinely scared about their well-being. I think Donald Trump was the worst choice Americans have made in quite a long time.

The Election Night
On Tuesday the 8th November we came to school at 8 o'clock PM. The teachers gave us some instructions and then we started eating. While we were eating we searched group members. Then we started working in workshops. There were five workshops and we could choose four of them and work on them until midnight. After that we found new groups and did final exercises. My group had to create a timeline with former presidents of the US. Finally we started watching the livestream altogether. It was really exciting to see who would be the new president of the US (Clinton or Trump!). Some of us fell asleep while watching the stream. The result of the elections was that Donald Trump won. He is the new president of the US. Some of us were expecting that, but nobody really agreed to that result. However, it was a really interesting and somehow exciting election night.

The Election Night
On the 8th November 2016 we went to school to watch the presidential election.
From 8 o'clock until 12 o'clock we worked in different workshops where we learned a few things about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. For example we watched speeches of Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and Michelle Obama. From 12 o'clock until 6 o'clock we stayed awake to watch the election. But we were also allowed to sleep.
I think it was a great idea and a funny night and the food was tasty. But the results did shock us because we have never thought that America would really vote for Donald Trump.

The election night
On the evening of the 8th November the whole 10th grade met in school. Everyone was supposed to bring something to eat for our big buffet. After we had tasted the food, we started our workshops. From five possible ones we had to do four. In the workshops we analyzed speeches, created timelines, looked at advertisement-strategies and explained caricatures. At midnight we were finished and then we had to write our results on big posters for the other classes to look at. Then the election started- state for state. It was a long, funny and interesting night. Sadly, we couldn't stay until the end of the election because it took two hours longer than planned. We didn't see the ending together but when we went home it was clear who would win. Even though many of us feared Donald Trump to win, many of us expected this result. But still, everyone was shocked and worried about the future of the United States of America.
